3-D Printing

by José Mecham

You are on the moon……….you are running out of oxygen. You have two minutes to live. What do you do… you print a new oxygen tank. Yes print one. Heck you could even print a wrench to hit someone with. (but don’t do that). I am going to tell you about the fantastic 3D printer. And the history and What it does and so much more.

The History of 3-D Printing

Chuck Hull, the inventor of 3D printing. redorbit is where i got some of my research,  Chuck Hull invented the 3D printer in 1984. Isnt that weird? Well  I don't know about you but I didn't hear about three dimensional printing until like last year! But even though 3D printing has gotten popular. It doesn't change the fact that it was invented forever ago by Chuck Hull.

Almost 30 years ago the 3D printer would cost almost $20,000. According to redorbit, The first three dimensional printer was first sold around 1980. They costed a lot of money but know you can get them for less than 1,000 dollars. If you think that that is expensive think again, just three years ago it was costing as much as 20,000 dollars! So that is probably why they got more popular because now they cost as 500 dollars, now that is cheap for a 3D printer!

This paragraph is about how it has improved over time. According to unknown author, The first 3D printer was very slow. And now they can even print chocolate! They are also discovering ways to 3D print organs! it is called bioprinting. It is where they print human cells layer by layer! Now that is interesting!

What it Does

This paragraph is about how it works. According to mashable, what 3D printing does is that it takes a design from a computer and prints it. The design can not be too complicated but they can have moving parts. For example 3D printers can’t print a 3D printer, but they can print a monkey wrench. Which has moving parts!

This paragraph is about the material it uses. According to stratasys, 3D printers use diferent materials. For example some 3D printers might use thermoplastic (a type of plastic) or some might use PolyJet Photopolymers. I have no idea what that is it is just use to make more detailed stuff. Now you're probably wondering what PolyJet is, well I have a word of advice, google it, because I don't know what it is.

This paragraph is about how it works. According to the internet, A 3D printer melts the material it has. Then the melted material dries super quickly which makes the first layer. Then its just like a skin where it has layers. So it just prints layer upon layer upon layer. Until it is finsished.
