Intro

Have you ever wondered about the vehicle that works under water?   Well they use them in the military.  ThatŐs right itŐs the nuclear submarine.  Let me tell you more about the nuclear submarine.

History of the Nuclear Submarine

This paragraph is about who invented the nuclear submarine.  According to wikianswers.com, there were many people that invented the nuclear submarine.  So an individual didnŐt invent it.  It was an actual group (wiki.answers.com).

This paragraph is about the first nuclear submarine.  According to wikipedia, the first nuclear submarine was named Turtle.  It was invented in 1775. Sometime in the 1800Ős the French invented a human-powered submarine.  This submarine was designed by Robert Fulton.  But in 1804 the French gave up on that idea, also the British thought about it but gave up too (wikipedia.org).  I think itŐs interesting that it is called Turtle.  Because why would they name it after a very, slow animal, when the nuclear submarine is way fast.  (wikipedia.org)

This paragraph is about nuclear submarines during WWll for Germany.  According to wikipedia.org during WWll Germany had the most submarines out of everyone that was fighting.  The Germans thought that maybe they could try to defeat Great Britain through underwater.  It took about a year to about 1,000 submarines in 1940. (wikipedia.org)

This paragraph is about the US in WWll.  According to wikipedia.org, AmericaŐs submarines destroyed more Japanese shipping than all of the other weapons.  In WWll the US had 314 submarines In the US Navy.  (wikipedia.org)

What is the Nuclear Submarine?

What is a nuclear submarine?  ItŐs a submarine powered

by nuclear fuel.  The nuclear submarine is HUGE! According to mericanhistory.com, itŐs the exact length of a football field.  Which is 360 ft. long.  Also itŐs 33 ft. in width (americanhistory.com).  It can go 250 meters deep.  Which is pretty deep for such a big vehicle.  Also the nuclear submarine weighs about 12,190 tons.  The nuclear submarine has a crew of about 109 people.

This paragraph is about how long a nuclear submarine can last until it runs out of power.  According to wikipedia.org it can last up to six months, without running out of power.  Submarines still use non-nuclear fuel, because itŐs cheaper.  The larger submarines use nuclear power.  However all submarines use a diesel engine to recharge the ships battery when needed.  (wikipedia.org)

Conclusion

So thatŐs what a nuclear submarine is and thatŐs the history.  It has helped in many wars and they will continue to help in the future wars.  They are a great invention!
