Sixty-nine percent of American heads of households play computer and video games.

Brief Summary:

Sixty-nine percent of American heads of households play computer and video games.
I was curious myself when I saw the question that you had asked, so I jumped in and did some research. While there are a lot of sites out there, the one that I linked to above is, in my opinion, the best reliable nutshell stats out there.
The results surprised me as to how many people in American play video games. In fact, 69% of American Heads of Households play computer/video games.
Other interesting stats:
62% of American video game players are male
38% are female
The average age of American video game players is: 33 years old. (I was surprised as to how high this number actually was-thought it would be more heavily inflated with all of the young players)
Ninety-three percent of people who make the actual purchase of computer games and 83% of people who make the actual purchase of video games are 18 years of age or older. The average age of the game buyer is 40 years old.
